When the Total Does Not Match
The counter card says six tokens, but the two visible price cards add to five. Help Milo pause, compare each item and ask an adult to correct the pretend total.
Start mission
What we practice
- Notice when a displayed total differs from the visible prices.
- Check one item and operation at a time without accusing anyone.
- Ask an adult for help and wait before completing a real transaction.
Practice a Calm Total Check
Set up one harmless pretend mismatch so the child can practice pausing and asking without carrying a real dispute.
What helped Milo check without blaming the helper? When should an adult take over?
1. Make two pretend item cards and one deliberately incorrect total card. Tell the child in advance that one card may need fixing—do not use a hidden gotcha. 2. Compare each line with counters. 3. Model: “These totals differ. Let’s check together.” Replace the card when found. Adults remain responsible for real receipts, staff conversations and payment.
