Money & everyday choices · Ages 6–8

Dinner is the plan. The shiny car can be a wish.

Milo and Dad shop for soup ingredients, then spot a tempting toy. Soup or a Shiny Car? introduces needs and wants through one family’s situation, without making children responsible for the household budget.

Milo and Dad draw ingredients for dinner on a shopping list.

Inside the adventure

Small choices your child can practice.

Check today’s situation

The family already has a pot and water, but needs ingredients for dinner. An item’s role depends on what the family needs now.

Make room for a wish

Wanting a toy is okay. Naming a want does not mean it must be bought today or that the child has done something wrong.

Let adults handle the budget

Milo helps with the list; Dad decides what fits the spending plan. Children can ask questions without carrying adult financial worries.

A pretend shopping list

Practice together at a comfortable moment. Your child can speak, point, draw or take a break.

  1. Choose an imaginary meal and draw three ingredients. Use pretend items; no purchase or spending is needed.
  2. Add a tempting extra, such as a toy. Ask “What do we need for this meal?” rather than calling the toy bad.
  3. Place the extra on a wish list. Say “We can enjoy wanting this without getting it today.”
  4. Change the situation: “We already have bread at home.” Notice how the shopping list changes, while the adult keeps responsibility for the budget.

Keep money conversations gentle

Family circumstances differ. Avoid comparing what other families can afford or suggesting that a child’s choices cause money difficulties. Some items may be a need for one person and a want for another.

Questions grown-ups often ask

Are wants bad?

No. Wants can bring enjoyment. The lesson is about checking the situation and planning, not feeling ashamed for liking things.

Should I explain our whole budget?

Use a simple, age-appropriate explanation of today’s plan. Adults remain responsible for essential spending and financial decisions.
