Add It Before You Pick
Milo has six paper tokens and two activity cards he likes. Help him add the pretend prices before choosing, using counters or a number line instead of guessing.
Start mission
What we practice
- Read one pretend price at a time.
- Combine two small costs using counters, marks or a number line.
- Compare the total with the available paper tokens before choosing.
Make the Total Visible
Practice small totals with paper tokens and a method the child can see, touch or point to.
Which tool helped Milo see that five fits inside six? What could he do if he loses his place again?
1. Make three item cards with costs from 1 to 4 and six paper counters. 2. Let the child choose two cards, then add using counters, marks or a number line. 3. Compare the total with the limit and change the pair if needed. Do not time the child, remove the tools or turn a mistake into a memory test. Adults handle real prices and purchases.
